It has come to my attention from a few people that someone on another website is spreading false information about the swaksmack extension.

Particularly, as I understand it, there was concern of the extension reading "private PMs"
1. As the main developer, I can tell you that is not the case.
2. The extension is open-source so anyone (other people, JF, you, etc) can review the source and see if any such collection takes place
3. The only data that is "collected" is under the extension logging options. Even then, if you choose to log the data (ots, deals, chat), the information is stored locally where you specify it to be stored and is NOT transmitted to anyone else.
4. If people are claiming the extension collects personal information from you or is reading your PMs, they have no idea what they are talking about. Perhaps they are trying to scare people away from the extension and JF. I don't know what their motivation is is spreading such false information.

Now, it would be possible for someone to write an extension that could collect your PMs for example and transmit the data without your explicit permission. It is a reason to ALWAYS be weary of ANY software you install on your computer or when visiting unknown websites. But again, the extension does not do any of that and it has also been submitted by me to mozilla for review so that is can be officially hosted at their addon site.
